Where Pool Calcium Comes From

Water in the Valley carries a lot of dissolved minerals. That's what people mean by hard water. When pool water evaporates in the heat, the water leaves and the minerals stay behind.

The water level also rises and falls as the pool loses water and gets topped off. Each time, a thin film of minerals dries on the tile. The sun bakes it on, and layer by layer it turns into the white or gray crust you see at the waterline.

Water chemistry plays a part too. When the balance drifts, calcium comes out of the water faster and sticks to tile, plaster and equipment.

How Pool Tile Cleaning Is Done

Light, chalky buildup comes off more easily. Older, thicker scale that's been baking on the tile for years takes more time and stronger methods.

We look at the tile and the buildup first, then pick the approach that fits. Glossy glass tile and rough stone tile don't clean the same way, and we keep that in mind. The goal is clean tile with the finish still looking good.

Pool tile cleaning is usually done with the water in the pool. The calcium line sits right at the surface, where we can reach it.

Keeping Calcium Off After the Cleaning

In hard water, some calcium will always try to come back. Balanced water slows it down a lot. That's part of every visit on our weekly pool cleaning, along with brushing the tile line before buildup gets a chance to set.

Calcium can also build up inside salt cells and heaters, where it's harder to see. If yours is running poorly, our pool repair page covers that. Stains spread across the plaster are a different job, and a pool acid wash is the fix for those.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to drain the pool to clean the tile?

In most cases, no. The calcium sits at the waterline, so we can reach it with the water in the pool.

Will the calcium come back?

Some will, because the water here is hard. Balanced water and regular brushing slow it down, so the next cleaning is a smaller job.

Is tile cleaning the same as an acid wash?

No. Tile cleaning works on the waterline tile with the pool full. An acid wash cleans the plaster in a drained pool.
